social events. We are committed to initiatives
that enrich our community while providing
ongoing mentorship and support to those in
need. To kick off our celebrations, we organized a
talk on financial empowerment in May.

MPIqra, the 28-year-old third-generation politician from theSamajwadi Party, has won the Kairana election with over 5lakh votes. Raised in Shamli, she moved to Delhi for hereducation, graduating from Lady Sri Ram College (2012,BA(H) History) and earning an LLB from Delhi University.Iqra aims to empower women, especially Muslim women,support farmers, improve education facilities, attractinvestments for industry, and create opportunities forMuslim weavers. Her victory marks a significant milestonein an area where patriarchy is still prevalent.

Shambhavi Choudhary Becomes India’s Youngest MP
Shambhavi Choudhary, representing the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), has made history as the youngestMember of Parliament, winning the Lok Sabha seat fromSamastipur, Bihar. At 25, she is one of the youngest MPs inthe 18th Lok Sabha. Shambhavi holds a bachelor’s degreein sociology from Lady Shri Ram College and a master’sdegree from the Delhi School of Economics.

We are thrilled to announce that Smita Premchander,
ELSA (1978, Economics Honours), has been invited to
join the Board of the United Nations University's
Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) in Tokyo. You

Executive Board of the Munich Climate Insurance
Initiative, contributing her expertise to this vital global

Jyoti Malhotra Appointed Editor-in-Chief
(first woman) of The Tribune Group
The Tribune Trust has appointed veteran journalist Jyoti
Malhotra as the Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune Group.
With extensive experience in print, TV, and digital media,
Ms. Malhotra has held senior editorial roles at India
Today, Indian Express, The Print, and Star News, and has
contributed regularly to BBC Radio. She is renowned for
her insightful writing on politics, diplomacy, and culture,
particularly regarding Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Former Ambassador Riva Ganguly Das Elected to Human Rights Council Advisory Committee
Riva Ganguly Das, 1980 batch Political Science graduate from
Lady Shri Ram College, has been elected to the Advisory
Committee by the Human Rights Council during its 54th session.
She has previously served as Ambassador to Romania, Moldova
and Albania. Her appointment underscores her continued
impact in the field of human rights.

Award 2024 for Best Director
Jigyasa Taneja Sethi has been honored with the prestigious
Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024 for Best Director. Her film,
Strange Destiny, highlights her exceptional storytelling and
direction, portraying the inspiring journey of Mother Veronica.
The docudrama captures Mother Veronica’s determination to
create educational opportunities for women in India, despite
societal and personal challenges. Sethi’s nuanced direction and

ELSA Ishika’s Dance Company Shines in Oakland |
Ishami Dance Company, founded by ELSA Ishika, is a South Asian Contemporary dance
ensemble dedicated to exploring and amplifying the diverse voices, stories, and histories of
the South Asian diaspora. Their mission is to challenge social and cultural constructs
through art by blending Western dance forms—such as modern, contemporary, and jazz -
with traditional South Asian styles like Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Garba, and Chhau.
Recently, Ishami presented a spectacular performance in Oakland, US, with a theme
centered on the Partition of Bengal. The show highlighted the company's unique ability to
bring powerful cultural narratives to life, demonstrating the exceptional talent and
creativity of ELSAs wherever they are.

The ELSA Executive Committee recently hosted a highly informative session
in the ELSA Talks series, featuring the accomplished alumna Ranjana
Agarwal. Ranjana, a distinguished Economics Honours graduate from LSR
(1977) and a seasoned Chartered Accountant with over 40 years of
experience, shared her extensive knowledge on inheritance planning.

Ranjana is the founder of Vaish & Associates and has served as the national president of
FICCI FLO. She is also a jury member for the FICCI CSR Awards and has actively contributed
to nonprofits in education and healthcare. Her professional excellence has been recognized
with the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award.
During the talk, Ranjana provided valuable insights into inheritance strategies, including
family trusts, settlements, charters, and Wills. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of
how to secure their family's future through effective planning and the implementation of
these strategies.
