ElsaTalks 4th edition
February 6 at India Habitat Center, New Delhi

"Muzaffar Ali In Conversation with Nelofar Currimbhoy"

A splendid evening with the film-maker, painter and poet, well-known for his sensitive portrayal of women in his classic movies- Umrao Jaan, Gaman, among others. The evening saw a prolific interaction with Muzaffar Ali as our ELSA Nelofar brought out valuable insights from him: on how he derives inspiration from the culture of different periods and places, what inspires him, his muses and how he views the changing world of cinema and women's characterization.

Will there be another Umrao Jann- who knows? But Muzaffar Ali is a revivalist for sure! Meera Ali, the accomplished architect also joined the Talk and inspired us with her journey and influence on Muzaffar's works.

Such a humbling experience as Muzaffar and Meera interacted with the audience on their other creative ventures such as the House of Kotwara. An emotional audience added to the evening as ELSA Meeta Pandit sang an impromptu beautiful piece.

Do check the LSR Alumna Facebook page for pics and videos of the event!

ELSA Talks in Bangalore (1st edition)
in collaboration with The Oberoi, February 18

We, in Bangalore, were enthused by the success of ELSA Talks in Delhi. This prompted us to start a similar series here in Bangalore. ELSA Talks is a forum to encourage discussions amongst influencers and decision makers on social and cultural issues. The topic for the inaugural talk was “Changing Behaviour”. The eminent panel featured Mr Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director, Titan Company Ltd. and Chairman of Vistara, Ms Manju Subramanyam, Principal of Delhi Public School, Bangalore North and Dr Radha Murthy, Co-Founder and Managing Trustee of the Nightingales Medical Trust. The event was moderated by our very own ELSA, Vinita Bali.

We had a very appreciative audience engaged in a meaningful dialogue with the panelists at the end of the discussion. There were many takeaways and many unanswered questions and as usual, we ran out of time.

Some feedback comments

  • “Had wonderful, thought provoking and enlightening evening. Meeting my college mates was special. Thank you.”
  • “Was a wonderful evening. Some very interesting insights.”
  • “My thoughts...Each of the topics were mega topics independently and could be stand alone sessions. I too connected with Radha's concerns. This is a reality which the sandwich generation has to deal with, and in that context I found her overall pessimism understandable. Manju's optimism was wonderful as well but it felt like two different zones and hence challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed the talk. And again, a big thank you to all the organizers.”
  • “Wanted to drop a big thank you for Sunday. It’s a great initiative and an awesome kick off. Kudos to you & the team who pulled it off. So nice to see the alumnae actively engage in a broader, meaningful way.”
  • “It was an excellent panel discussion, much better than I had expected. Vinita Bali was an outstanding moderator — I can see her talent clearly now. I am so glad that I went. It will be fantastic if ELSA can maintain this quality of events every month. They said that they are planning such events every month.“

Our panelists also say:
- “Thank you for having me over. Enjoyed every moment”-Manju Balasubramanyam
- “It was very value adding for me as well” -Bhaskar Bhat .

We are happy to announce our second edition of Elsa Talks being held on April 15, 2018 at The Oberoi Bengaluru. The next topic is “Pursuing Excellence”. We look forward to more ELSAs and friends join us.

Talent Edge & ELSA Webinar

The third and final edition of The Leadership Talk Series – an online webinar series brought to you by ELSA and Talentedge - showcased a young ELSA - Ishita Anand – and her startup journey in setting up Bitgiving.com. Bringing a fresh perspective to the leadership discussion, Ishita shared her experiences and challenges in becoming a young entrepreneur and leader.

Named in the Forbes Under 30 List for Asia in 2017, Ishita is a young and dynamic leader with infectious energy, perseverance and foresightedness that helped BitGiving grow from a two member company to a leader in the crowdfunding niche. YouTube links for the sessions are available below:

ELSA Chapter Mumbai

Members of ELSA Mumbai working on the collaborative project The Blue Sky on gender sensitisation met on February 7th at LPQ in Bandra.

It was an extremely fruitful session where the road map of the task was worked out. More of this in the coming months!

The next step in this process is a workshop on the same by Priyanka Awasthi in mid March.

This will be followed by a writing workshop by Urmila.

The product will be a book with stories written on gender issues in real world situations like experiences at a restaurant, park, market place etc.

The deadline is Dec 2018 for the book to be printed and published! Ambitious, yes!

Upcoming Events

For the second year in a row, ELSA brings you the Global Mentoring Walk in partnership with Vital Voices, FICCI FLO, and the Arch Academy of Design to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 10, 2018, Delhi.

The Global Mentoring Walk is an opportunity to highlight the importance of women’s leadership, and to accelerate the impact of women leaders through mentoring. It convenes established women leaders and emerging women leaders to walk together in their community. As they walk, they discuss their professional challenges and successes to establish a mentoring relationship.

A historic 145 Global Mentoring Walks will take place in over 60 countries around the world on the 10th of March this year. The concept for this initiative derived from American media icon, founder and former CEO of Oxygen Media, Geraldine Laybourne. Her busy schedule did not allow for her to meet with the dozens of young women who were eager to learn from her and she launched the Mentoring Walks across the US. Since 2008, the annual Global Mentoring Walk has reached thousands of women in over a dozen countries across the globe.

Smita Mankad, an ELSA (1992 Eco Hons) and on our Executive Committee, and Archana Surana are both Vital Voices alumni, and the Flag Bearers for the New Delhi walk.

Join us on Saturday, March 10th, 2018 for the New Delhi Global Mentoring Walk at Lodhi Gardens fro 7:45 – 10am. Visit our website www.lsralumna.org to register as a mentee.
