Views from college

Recently we had posted some pics from college including the LSR corridor. Overwhelmed with your wonderful, nostalgic response…here is what you said

  • "Nostalgia…
  • "LSR corridor. Imagined a future discussed all good ideas and laughed with pals on this stretch. Our footprints are wiped now , but memory remains fresh.
  • I miss this..... Life was fun when we were there...
  • It was a pleasure walking through these corridors. So beautiful.

ELSA Changemaker - Annette Philip

BA (Honours) in Journalism, class of 2003

Annette Philip, spent hours and hours, sometimes full days in the auditorium green room, between classes studying Journalism at LSR back in early 2000's. Almost two decades since graduating, she has come a long way as a valuable asset to the musical fraternity.

"We would rehearse with Indian Music Society and Western Music Society and really experiment, explore with all," she reminisces about her days in college. "We could bring all sorts of ideas to the table and anything was possible. I liked the freedom we were given by college and MG was such a big supporter of the groups and of arts in general. I'm so grateful I was part of such an amazing college that allowed us to be free."

Following her heart and passion, Annette took a deep dive with music at Berklee College of Music after graduating from LSR, and has worn multiple hats since. She is now a faculty member at Berklee College of Music, Artistic Director of Berklee India Exchange, Creative Director and Core Vocalist of Women of the World and INDIA New England News Women of the Year 2016

Last month she was bestowed the Artist of the Year Award at New England Choice Award, adding yet another prestigious feather to her repertoire of achievements. The awards ceremony was held at Westin Hotel in Waltham MA and was attended by 400 community leaders, businessmen, professionals and philanthropists.

Annette's talents extend to Indian vocals, composition, voice overs, pianist, producer and choral specialist! She also loves to experiment with the human voice!

We ELSAs are so very proud of our changemaker in the world of global music- Annette Philip! Way to go!

Bangalore Chapter

ELSA Talks Bangalore will host its final session for the year 2018 on December 2. Initiated by the alumnae with The Oberoi Bengaluru as the venue partner, and Meghna Das as design consultant, these sessions have generated nuanced discussions and meaningful connections.

Our attempt was to create a forum to discuss issues that affect our lives and our community. Using the form of a panel discussion, the sessions saw invited guests as participants on both side of the dais. Each session was conducted and moderated by an ELSA and the panel included experienced speakers from multiple spheres of influence.

Of primary importance was the theme chosen for each session. The Talks kickstarted in February with ‘Changing Behaviour’ where change was noted and questions raised about these changes across age groups and social strata.

The second session in April was about the direction of change with the theme ‘Pursuing Excellence’. Here, strategies were discussed that could help any individual to target excellence.

Acknowledging the obstacles that come on the path to excellence, the third session in June addressed the theme ‘Navigating Adversity’. The discussion addressed both personal and societal adversity, suggesting through lived examples, ways to deal with it.

The fourth session in September encouraged participants to see themselves as part of the country we live in and to discuss what that means. The theme was ‘Deconstructing Citizenship’.

The fifth and final session for the year 2018 hopes to take forward issues raised in the previous session. On December 2, The Talk will host a panel discussion on ‘Embracing Diversity’. The conviction is that Citizenship needs to do just that, especially in a country as diverse as ours.

The purpose of these sessions was to acknowledge that nothing will change unless we change ourselves. The idea was to raise questions and set people thinking.

We believe we have done that.

We now look forward to Embracing Diversity on December 2 at 3.30 pm. The panel includes Padma Shri Laila Tyabji, chairperson and co-founder Dastakar, social worker, designer, writer, craft activist. Priya Chetty Rajggopal managing partner Multiversal Advisory. Also an animal and environmental activist. Ajay Cadambi history teacher and music buff also a member of the LGBTQ community. Moderator is Elsa Yumna Hari Singh

The best of Nandi Hills is not at the Top; its at the Foot !

Soak in several centuries of history as we take you through an enchanting tour of the Bhoganandishwara Temple, dating from the 9th century; ponder while taking a poignant short trek through the 19th century abandoned Sultanpet British Cemetery nearby - and, reminisce about the development of our Railways at the nearly 100 year old Nandi Halt train station a short distance away.

And, there's yet more for those with the inclination - Sir M. Visvesvaraya's birthplace and museum at Muddenahalli, a few kilometers away.

Straddling this scene, quite literally at various points on the walking trail, take in several snippets about the "Siege and Battle of Nundydroog" of October 1791, when the area was witness to a key engagement between the troops of Tipu Sultan and the British under The Earl Cornwallis during the 3rd Anglo-Mysore War.
